About Picasso and Mother & Child
Pablo Picasso was a Spanish artist and is one of the world’s most famous of the last century.

A new father, Picasso made many images of mothers with children: between 1921 and 1923, he produced at least twelve works on this subject. In 1922, Picasso created this masterpiece, possibly in response to the recent birth of his son Paulo. Mother and Child might be described as more of a sketch than a painting. Painting depicts a mother and her child enjoying a joyful moment in what may be a rural landscape. Here a child sit on his mother’s lap while she gazes at him. Mother and Child is one of Picasso’s less abstract works though he was well known for his Cubism by the 1920s. The figure of the mother and child was one that Picasso kept coming back to throughout his career.
